Volunteering

The North Tyneside Steam Railway is proudly run almost entirely by dedicated volunteers whose passion, commitment, and enthusiasm keep this much-loved heritage railway operating for the community. As an independent heritage organisation, we rely on the time, skills, and energy of volunteers to preserve our historic locomotives, maintain our track and infrastructure, welcome visitors, and ensure every operating day is a memorable experience.

Our volunteer team is made up of people from all walks of life, of all ages and backgrounds, each bringing their own unique skills and experiences. From engineering and restoration work to customer service, administration, event support, retail, gardening, operations, and education, there is a wide range of exciting and rewarding roles available. Whether you are technically minded, enjoy working with the public, prefer hands-on practical tasks, or would like to support behind the scenes, there is a place for you here.

We are always delighted to welcome new volunteers who can spare some time to help — whether that is a few hours occasionally or a more regular commitment. Some roles involve structured training and ongoing responsibility, while others offer flexible opportunities to get involved when your time allows. Full training and support are provided, and no previous railway experience is necessary — just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Volunteering at the North Tyneside Steam Railway offers far more than simply giving your time. It is an opportunity to develop new skills, gain practical experience, and explore interests you may never have considered before. You will meet like-minded people who share a passion for heritage, engineering, and community, forming friendships that often last a lifetime. Many volunteers gain confidence, a strong sense of achievement, and valuable experience that can enhance a CV or support career development.

Most importantly, by volunteering, you become part of preserving an important piece of local railway history for future generations. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, plays a vital role in keeping the railway alive and thriving.

If you have ever wanted to be part of a working steam railway, learn new skills, or simply give something back to your community, we would love to hear from you. Join us and help keep the spirit of steam alive at the North Tyneside Steam Railway.

Volunteering commitment

We truly appreciate your help. Of course, all we ask is that you commit to the following:

  • Become a member of the NTSRA
  • Register with North East Museums
  • Attend an induction
  • A reasonable level of health and fitness is required

These steps help ensure your safety, a smooth start, and an enjoyable volunteering experience at the North Tyneside Steam Railway.
